SMACNA LI Joint Meeting with ASHRAE LI
On January 11, 2022 our association held a joint meeting with ASHRAE LI. SMACNA National Engineer Pat Brooks made a virtual presentation on Duct System Acoustics. Pat’s presentation covered the fundamentals of calculating duct system acoustics. The Engineers in attendance learned what noise is, how to mathematically combine noise levels is and how to control noise in duct systems. Frequency and amplitude and how people perceive noise are important concepts that were also covered. The attendees also learned the difference between sound power and sound pressure and how to convert sound power levels to sound pressure. The range of hearing and the problems with low frequency noise vs high frequency noise was discussed. Natural attenuation of duct elements and how to determine it was reviewed. How to solve acoustic problems using distance, silencers and duct insertion losses were examined as well as how noise criteria (NC) levels are used.
SMACNA Contractors and Chapter Executives from across New York State gathered at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, NY for 2 days of interesting, informative educational programs. Guest Speakers included Attorney William Lowe who spoke regarding NYS Marijuana Legalization as well as the NY Hero Act, SMACNA National Director of Labor Services & HR Joye Blanscett,, Lobbyist Denise Murphy McGraw, SMACNA National President Angie Simon, and leadership expert Don Riling. One favorite session for all is the opening meeting, where contractors from each chapter provide reports on their respective areas. This always leads to a great interactive discussion.
